From artists and filmmakers to scientists, programmers, architects and designers, Dorkbot is a global movement for people doing strange things with electricity. Makers, tinkerers and performers gather to demonstrate and discuss the weird and wonderful robots, musical instruments, games and wearable electronics they create, hack and invent.

Oct 2006 - present

Dorkbot is a global movement whose motto is simply “people doing strange things with electricity”. Started at Columbia University Computer Music Center, New York in 2000, founder Douglas Repetto’s aim was to learn about the strange things that creative people are doing with electricity around the world, with no regard for genre, style, school of thought or area of expertise.

Dorkbot is now a global movement of artists, inventors, scientists, engineers and students with over seventy autonomous chapters world-wide organizing regular meet-ups in a friendly and informal atmosphere. Generally attendees present new works for informal peer review, encouraging people to get creative with technology, to experiment and to embrace a DIY ethos in an atmosphere that inspires people to participate through a shared excitement about materials and ideas.

Dorkbot Bristol – people doing strange things with electricity in the West of England – has been meeting since October 2006 and follows the global format with makers, tinkerers and performers gathering to demonstrate and discuss the weird and wonderful robots, musical instruments, games and wearable electronics they create, hack and invent.

2009 has seen Dorkbot Bristol collaborating with Media Art Bath, an organization set up to promote the development of media art and cross-platform art practices, on a series of events focusing on electronic creations that make music, sound or noise.

Visit the Dorkbot Bristol web site to find out more about forthcoming meetings and events and for a flavour of the vast range of ideas from people in the South West of England.
